Why Some People Attract Mosquitoes More Than Others

June 30, 2026

It Starts With the Air You Breathe

Every time you exhale, you release carbon dioxide, and mosquitoes sniff that out. They can pick up CO2 from more than 30 feet away and follow it straight to you.

The more CO2 you give off, the easier you are to find. Two things drive that output: body size and activity. Larger bodies naturally produce more CO2, which is part of why adults get bitten more than young kids. As for an activity, your breathing speeds up when you're running, playing pickleball, or just exercising in general; all that extra exhaling signals nearby mosquitoes. So if you tend to get swarmed right after getting some activity, your own breathing is part of the reason.

Do Mosquitoes Prefer a Certain Blood Type?

Mosquitoes do prefer a blood type and tend to favor people with Type O as opposed to people with type A. Type B typically lands somewhere more in the middle. On top of that, most people give off a chemical signal through their skin that broadcasts their blood type, while a smaller group doesn't. If you happen to be a Type O who sends that signal, you're an especially easy target.

Even though you can't change your blood type, knowing you're high-risk means you can take prevention more seriously.

What Your Skin Gives Off

Mosquitoes don't just smell CO2. They're drawn to the chemicals on your skin, and everyone's chemical mix differs.

A few things that make you more appealing:

  • Lactic acid and ammonia. These build up in sweat, especially after a workout. The more you sweat, the more you attract.
  • Body temperature. Mosquitoes love heat. A warm, flushed body is easier to find.
  • Skin bacteria. The natural bacteria living on your skin produce scents that some mosquitoes find irresistible. This is a big reason mosquitoes bite your ankles and feet so often.

This mix is also why mosquitoes might bite you and leave the person next to you alone. Two people sitting side by side can put out completely different scent profiles, which is why bites rarely get shared evenly.

Does Perfume Attract Mosquitoes?

Perfume, especially floral and fruity scents in particular, can often attract mosquitoes more than plain skin. The floral and fruity scents pull them in since mosquitoes feed on flower nectar when they're not biting. Heavily scented lotions, soaps, and hair products can have the same effect.

If mosquitoes like to bite you often, switch to unscented products during peak season. It's a small swap that costs nothing and can noticeably reduce the buzzing around you. Save the nice cologne for indoor plans and keep your outdoor routine as scent-free as possible.

Other Targets

  • Dark clothing. Black, navy, and red stand out to mosquitoes. Light colors are harder for them to spot.
  • Alcohol. A single drink has been shown to make people more attractive to mosquitoes. Alcohol bumps up your body heat and sweat, making you an easier target.
  • Standing water nearby. Mosquitoes breed in it. A clogged gutter or a forgotten bucket can turn your yard into a nursery.

How to Make Yourself Less Appealing

  • Wear light-colored, loose clothing that covers your skin.
  • Use an EPA-registered repellent with DEET or Picaridin.
  • Skip the perfume and scented lotions when you're heading outside.
  • Run a fan on the patio. Mosquitoes are weak fliers and hate the breeze.
  • Dump standing water around your property at least once a week.

When It's Time to Call in Backup

Repellent and long sleeves help, but they don't fix the real problem: a yard full of mosquitoes looking for someone to bite. If you're being eaten alive every time you step outside, the issue is your environment, not just your blood type.

That's where professional treatment comes in. A targeted yard service knocks down the adult population and treats the breeding spots you can't always see, so you can actually enjoy your own backyard again.

Greg's Pest Control can help you take your yard back. Reach out today and trade the swatting for some peace.
